Learning Specialist Support

The New Start Program

  •  Students who enter the New Start program typically enter with low test scores
  •  New start students have attended summer school to receive additional help in preparing for the English I curriculum
  • The New Start students will complete the TOAL (Test of Adolescent and Adult Language)

Directed Study Tutorial Class

  •  Consistent contact with students
  • Support for English I; Algebra, Algebra E or Geometry; ILS or Biology; other classes
  •  Research and discussion of study strategies, organizational skills, and test taking techniques
  •  Provide one-on-one tutoring and discussion of goal setting and success

  •  Alternate testing environment
  • One-on-one consultation for strategies or techniques
  • Organization skills implemented and evaluated on individual basis
  • Additional assessment opportunities for those students who may need information

Support for Teachers

  • Available to work with teachers to design evaluations that allow students to demonstrate their knowledge
  • Process assessment reports from outside sources that will be teacher-friendly
  • Provide alternate instruction to students who have not been able to understand the material
  • Available to work in classes to assist students individually or in small groups coinciding with instruction
  •  Provide a distraction-free environment for testing or additional time for testing

Support for Parents

  •  On-going communication with parents of New Start students
  •  Contact for parents of other students with learning needs
  • Liaison for parents and teachers or parents and resource specialists and teachers
  • Provide information to parents about documentation requirements for accommodations for standardized testing
