Anti-Bullying, Harassment & Intimidation Policy & Procedure
September, 2011
Dear Parents:
We celebrated our first liturgy of the year on Friday, September 9th. The beautiful late summer weather allowed us to join together in our courtyard where a poignant memorial was established to honor those lives lost in the September 11th tragedy. Two of our student clubs worked together, under the direction of Charlie Rousseau, to pay tribute to the anniversary of 9-11. The Young Democrats and the Young Republican clubs worked tirelessly on this project and while they represent two opposing views on many political issues, they came together for this project. United we Stand was printed on a sign marking the anniversary. This is significant because it demonstrates how we work together even when we disagree or struggle with conflict.
Another example of how we can work together is supporting a new state law requiring all schools to have Anti-Bullying, Harassment and Intimidation policy and procedures in place by August 1, 2011. Bellarmine's new policy was written in consultation with parents, students, faculty, a sub-committee from our board of directors, and reviewed by our legal counsel. The policy is a response to Bellarmine's commitment to providing a safe and civil educational environment for students, employees, parents/legal guardians, volunteers, and patrons.
Unfortunately, bullying in schools is not a new problem, but it has become much more pervasive due largely to the availability of technology to students of all ages. Technology has provided a new and dangerous opportunity for children to “cyber-bully.” Messages and images placed on social media sites, as well as text messages, can have long-lasting effects for both the victim and the perpetrator. Schools must respond aggressively to protect all students from potential tragedy.
The anti-bullying, harassment and intimidation policy and procedure can be found here. Below are some of the highlights of the new policy.
